Gunnery Sergeant Francisco Olivas

Assistant Marine Officer Instructor

Gunnery Sergeant Olivas enlisted in the Marine Corps on April 2004 and underwent recruit training at 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, Hotel Company, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA where he was promoted meritoriously to Private First Class.

In July 2004, Private First Class Olivas completed Marine Combat Training at The School of Infantry Camp Pendleton, CA. He then reported to Logistics Operational School Camp Johnson, NC. Upon graduation in November 2004, Private First Class Olivas reported to First Service Support Group, First Marine Logistics Group, Camp Pendleton, CA. During this tour in June 2005 he was meritoriously promoted to Corporal.

In February 2006 Corporal Olivas got attached to Combat Logistics Battalion 5 and deployed to Camp Fallujah, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During this tour Corporal Olivas served as a convoy mechanic in more than 70 combat operations and in September 2006 was promoted to Sergeant. In that same month Sergeant Olivas was reassigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 1, where he served as the Platoon Sergeant. In February 2007 Sergeant Olivas was selected for the Marine Corps Baseball Team, where he played Short-Stop and Third Base.

In April 2008 Sergeant Olivas received orders to Drill Instructor School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA. During this period Sergeant Olivas served as a Drill Instructor for Hotel Company and as Senior Drill Instructor for Receiving Company. In December 2010 he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and served in Echo Company and as a Chief Drill Instructor of Special Training Company. 

In July 2011 Staff Sergeant Olivas was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division where he served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant, Maintenance Chief, Marine Corps Integrated Maintenance Management System & Global Combat Support System Staff Non-Commissioned officer in charge. Additionally, he served as the Battalions Uniform Victim Advocate. In April 2013 he received temporary orders to Marine Corps Logistics Command and deployed to Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he served as Delta TAMCN Staff Non-Commissioned officer in charge. After the deployment Staff Sergeant Olivas returned to 1st Marine Division and served as a Platoon Sergeant.

In May 2014 SSgt Olivas received orders to Officer Candidate School, Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA. In August 2014, he was assigned to the NROTC unit at the University of Wisconsin where he currently serves as the Assistant Marine Officer Instructor.

His personal awards include the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars and various unit awards.
